Fukuoka(福岡)

Fukuoka is a strategic point connecting Kyushu and Honshu. Various functions of the city are compactly integrated. Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, Munakata Taisha Shrine, registered as a World Heritage Site, and Akizuki, Asakura City, located in the southwestern part of the prefecture, are castle towns that retain their Edo period townscape. Fukuoka's famous gourmet specialties such as tonkotsu ramen and mentaiko (seasoned cod roe) cannot be missed. Famous events include the Hakata Dontaku Port Festival and the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival, which is held to pray for the eradication of the plague.
